  Complete information

Liposculpture or liposuction is a new, revolutionary aesthetic technique.  The term effectively describes the process - body sculpting to produce harmonious curves.  Genetically, women inherit fat deposits in the lower abdomen, hips, thighs and inside of the knees.  Unfortunately, even if we follow a strict diet or do repetitive exercises to lose these fat deposits, Mother Nature seems to want us to keep this unattractive shape.
Thanks to the evolution of medicine and aesthetic surgery, liposuction permits us to escape our nightmare with minimal scarring.  We can thus realize our impossible dream, which is to wear certain clothes, such as bathing suits, training outfits, skintight pants, etc., without feeling self-conscious about our body.

The most marvelous effect of liposuction is that once fat cells have been aspirated out of the body, they cannot reproduce.  They disappear forever!  Even if you gain weight after liposuction, your old form does not reappear.  You retain the harmonious curves that you obtained from the original liposculpture.

Liposculpture brings about a change in fat metabolism.  That is to say, weight loss after the operation is accomplished more easily.  There are also medical investigations which show that diabetics who undergo liposuction require a lower daily dose of insulin.

Once fat is removed, it is temporarily replaced by blood and water which causes swelling.  Because of this swelling, the immediate result is not the final result.  It takes time for the blood and water to reabsorb.

Most cases are done under general anesthesia .  The majority of patients return to their daily activities in the following days.  The bandage will be removed the day after the operation, and a shower is permitted.  I suggest that you wear elastic stockings for the skin to have good compression.  It is preferable to walk and to resume your daily activities as soon as possible.  If you stay in a sleeping or seated position, it is recommended to contract your calves to prevent venous stasis (blood pooling) in the legs.  The week after   the    operation,    massages   are recommended to accelerate healing.  This will help to eliminate the blood and water which replace fat after liposuction.

If there is an excess of skin or loss of its elasticity after the operation, it is necessary to intervene surgically.

Facial fat which generally descends because of gravity (for example, flabby cheeks, jowls and nasolabial folds) should not be removed, but instead repositioned by face lifting.  Fat is indispensable to harmonize the face and eliminate  the  hollows  of  the   cheeks  and cavities under the eyes (infraorbital folds).

Double chins are well treated in young people, but with age the neck muscle or platysma descends.  If we remove the fat, the muscle and bands show, resulting in an aged appearance.  Moreover, in a number of patients, there is an adipose (fat) deposit under the platysma which liposuction cannot treat; surgery is necessary in these cases.

  Your first visit

Under aged patients (minors) submitting for surgery must have their parents sign their approval of this surgery and this signature must be done in our presence.

My team and I will insist that you understand the surgery, convalescence, pain,  discomfort  and   complications  so that you are fully aware of all eventualities.  We are available at all times to answer your questions to your fullest satisfaction.

"Before" and "after" photographs are required to complete your file.  The photographs may be presented to aesthetic plastic surgeons at international congresses or published in medical journals and book chapters destined for teaching plastic surgery to doctors.  The cost of surgery includes all postoperative visits as well as surgical "retouching," if necessary.  We want to ensure that you are completely satisfied with the result.  A physical examination and completion of a medical questionnaire are also required for your file.

  Preoperative care

-Abstain from all medications containing ASPIRIN, garlic , vitamin E and naturals products for a minimum of 2 weeks prior to and after surgery.

-Consumption of alcohol (beer, wine or liquor) should be avoided for 2 weeks before and after the surgery.

-All sicknesses must be treated and controlled by your doctor.  If you are under a physician's care for a specific illness, you must obtain confirmation in writing that he or she agrees with your surgery.

-The day before and on the morning of the intervention, you are required to shampoo and wash the operation site with a "Spectro-Jel" soap in the shower.

-On the morning of the operation, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes.

-Avoid wearing jewelry and other valuables and contact lenses.
-If your surgery is performed under general anesthesia, you must be fasting. If it is under local anesthesia, you may eat a light breakfast on the morning of the operation ( for example, juice, toast with a slice of cheese).

-Someone should accompany you when you go back home and spend the night with you.

-Avoid wearing any tongue jewelry or contact lenses before the surgery.

- Avoid sun exposure two weeks before and after surgery.

VERY IMPORTANT:

If you take medication for high blood pressure, your lungs, antibiotics or any other reason, you may take them as usual, including the morning of the surgery.

  The operation

In most cases, surgery is done under general anesthesia. However depending of the case we might offer local anesthesia.   We are fully equipped for any eventualities or possible complications, even if they are extremely rare, especially in healthy individuals.

We have the best equipment available.  An atmosphere of relaxation prevails in the operating room.  This ambiance facilitates the most delicate, precise and meticulous techniques to obtain optimal results.

  Postoperative care

-After surgery, you may return to your home.  However, if you prefer, we can place you in a convalescent home for special treatments and from where transportation for office visits will be offered.

-The bandage will be removed 24 hours after the operation.

-Exercise, even of a moderate nature, is not recommended for 2 weeks.  No intense exercise is permitted for one month.  However, normal walks outside are suggested.

-Ecchymoses (bruises) may persist for 10 to 15 days, and edema will begin to diminish after 1 month.   It will disappear almost in the first year.   There may be some intermittent swelling in the first year after the intervention.

-Pain and pulling sensations can be relieved by analgesics prescribed on the day of the operation.  You may take extra-strength Tylenol if the pain persists.  No ASPIRIN for 2 weeks.

-The use of elastic stockings is strongly recommended after the operation.  A panty-girdle will be given to you on your surgery day  after liposuction of the abdominal area.

-You should wear the girdle during the day for one month. At night-time after one week you may remove it, if you feel comfortable.

-After the surgery, apply ice 20 minutes every hour for 48 hours and afterwards if needed.

-The second week after the surgery, massages will be necessary.  With oil, use your hands to compress and massage upwards.  Use a rigid massage brush for the following weeks.
-Apply a total protection sunscreen on the scars for at least one year.

  Risks and possible complications

Complications are very rare but are nevertheless possible despite the most rigorous standards of surgery.  We mention this not to alarm you or make you afraid, but to reassure you by keeping you well-informed.
Since the procedure is performed in a private, modern and very clean clinic, the risk of infection is minimal.  However, if an infection occurs, we prescribe antibiotics for you.

To diminish bleeding, we inject large quantities of vasoconstrictors.  Furthermore, to reduce bleeding, we use non-cutting canulas.  If there is a hematoma (an accumulation of blood), we have to drain it, but with the techniques we use we have not yet had this complication.

If we cut off the circulation in any given area, we may produce cutaneous necrosis.  We have not yet had this complication because we use non-cutting canulas.

As we use small canulas , we would be surprised if we see waves and irregularities.  If this condition is encountered, "retouching"  should result in  improvement.  In liposuction of the abdomen, because of a non-elastic skin, the excessive skin might have to be removed but there would be an ensuing scar and further expenses.  This resection would be done at least one year after the liposuction.

Most ecchymoses (bruises) disappear in the 2 weeks following the procedure.  Exceptionally, hemoglobin or its degradation products may stain the tissues and skin and cause some pigmentation.

The possibility of an allergic reaction to the medication, the disinfectant or the dressing is always present.

Any change in appearance will affect your self-perception and it may require several days or a few weeks for you to adjust.  It is perfectly normal to have doubts, worries and a slight loss of energy during this period of adjustment which will vary from one to three weeks after the operation.  These feelings will be replaced by a positive attitude as healing progresses and when you get used to your new look.
